If you’ve ever wondered whether spending a day feeding, hiking, and splashing with elephants in their natural environment could be an incredible experience, let me confirm. It absolutely can be.
A Sanctuary Born from Heart
Founded in July 2014, the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary was born from the heartfelt collaboration of Karen hill-tribe members and local Chiang Mai residents who couldn’t ignore the elephants’ plight anymore. Their mission? To create a lifelong home for these gentle giants, without rides, performances, or circus tricks—just respect, space, and tons of love.

Wearing Karen Shirts & Meeting Giants
The day began with a long ride from Chiang Mai, trading city sights for a green landscape. We changed into traditional Karen shirts, thoughtfully designed to put both us and the elephants at ease. Next on the agenda learning about elephant behavior, biology, and why rescue and respect matter.
Feeding: Load Up on Treats
Feeding an elephant is like handing snacks to the world’s hungriest giant. One swoop of the trunk, a quick grab, and the fruit disappears. And just when you think the moment’s over, they’re right back in front of you, trunk outstretched, clearly ready for round two.

Walking with Gentle Giants
Hiking through the forest with elephants was unforgettable. They kept a slow pace beside us, pausing now and then to eat from the tallest branches or to play with each other, rolling happily in the mud before stomping on down the trail.
Bath Time Fun
Bathing elephants was a blast. They splashed and sprayed in the water without a care, turning it into one big messy game. Watching them enjoy themselves was just as fun as joining in.

Meeting the Baby Elephant
One of the highlights of the day was meeting the baby elephant. Full of curiosity, it explored everything around it—sniffing at the ground, nudging leaves with its trunk, and splashing in the water. All the while, its mother kept a close eye, never straying far. She’d step in if the baby wandered too far or got too close to us, gently guiding it back with her trunk.
It’s Ethical & Joyful
This sanctuary’s commitment to elephant welfare, no riding, no forced tricks, just playful engagement in their natural rhythm was obvious in every moment. I left with a full heart, a camera full of photos, and a renewed appreciation for these giant creatures.
